Choosing The Right Surround System
If you've been out shopping and are new to the audio system world you're probably feeling a little lost. Salesman have no doubt been throwing all sorts of jargon your way and telling you about all the bells and whistles of their you beaut system. You are definitely not alone. One of the most confusing aspects of surround systems is where to put all those speakers. Let's try and sort it out once and for all.
Firstly you need to understand that there are several competing systems for creating surround system. Currently the most common is the 5.1 surround system. Simply put this is the use of 5 speakers plus a Subwoofer which is responsible for creating all that lovely bass or to put it another way the speaker that makes you feel the movie. The 5 speakers include 2 left and right at the front, 2 left and right at the back and a center up the front. There are newer 6.1 and 7.1 channel systems available now but all you have to remember is that these use additional speakers.
With all these multiple speakers available it's important to remember that more speakers does not necessarily equal better sound. If your budget allows for more 'quality' speakers then by all means go for it. But if you can only afford a 5.1 system with reasonable quality speakers don't go for the cheaper speakers just to get more of them. If you think you might be upgrading in the future then make sure you get a compatible system that will accomadate the extra speakers.
Of course this is only a recommendation and it is entirely up to you what will work best within your home and according to your tastes and wants in a surround sound system. Everybody's ears are different and hear sounds in a slightly different way. What you might consider great someone else might consider to be flat and unresponsive. For this reason it is a sensible idea to give the system a good listening to in the store before committing to a purchase. I also recommend taking more than one CD or DVD for the listening process in order to make sure the quality is consistent through different mediums.
Whether this is your first home theater or surround sound system or one of many upgrades you've made along the way I'm sure you will agree that the sound is far superior to the two speaker systems of days not that long ago.
